Market Context
This is effectively a Monday-type session because the week is shortened by Labor Day. I’m treating the open with a little more patience than usual because there is no major scheduled U.S. catalyst this morning, while geopolitical headlines are doing most of the work.
The dominant macro story is the renewed escalation in the Middle East. Brent crude is pushing toward [amount redacted], stock futures are under pressure, and VIX has opened materially higher. That combination immediately puts more weight on the risk-off side of the tape, even though both MES and MNQ are still sitting around important higher-timeframe support structures.
The two main headlines are:
Stock futures fall to start shortened week as oil prices climb
Brent crude nears [amount redacted]after strikes on Saudi energy sites amid renewed Mideast hostilities
There is also a diplomatic counterweight in the background, with Qatar reportedly working with regional partners and China to restart U.S.-Iran negotiations. For now, though, the market is reacting more strongly to the escalation in oil and geopolitical risk than to the diplomatic possibility.
This gives me a neutral-to-bearish opening posture, but I do not want to blindly chase the downside because both indices are sitting near important support zones while VIX is already extended higher from its opening gap.
Economic Calendar
There are no red-folder releases today.
The NFIB Small Business Index already printed:
Actual: 98.7 Forecast: 99.4 Previous: 99.8
Later:
3:00 PM — Consumer Credit
- ▸Forecast: [amount redacted]
- ▸Previous: [amount redacted]
Today is light, but the week becomes more important with CPI, PPI and unemployment-related data later in the week.
That means today's market is more likely to be driven by:
Oil Iran / U.S. / Israel headlines Bond-market behavior Positioning ahead of inflation data
Earnings
There is very little on the earnings calendar today that should materially move the broader indices.
The more meaningful releases this week arrive later, including:
Oracle Adobe Macy's Kroger
Nothing on today's slate changes the index narrative.
VIX — Volatility Roadmap
Current Price: ~15.75
VIX opened with a substantial upside gap.
New Week Opening Gap
14.53 — Low 14.79 — 25% 15.05 — Midpoint 15.30 — 75% 15.56 — High / Weekly Open
VIX is currently holding above the NWOG high and inside a 1H bearish FVG:
15.57 — FVG Low 15.83 — Midpoint 16.09 — FVG High
Today's range so far:
High: 15.94 Low: 15.50
The important thing is that volatility has already made a significant 0→1 move higher from Friday's lows.
VIX Bearish / Equity Bullish Scenario
My preferred retracement scenario is for VIX to trade back into the opening gap.
First:
15.56 — Weekly Open / NWOG High
Then:
15.30 — 75%
That is my primary near-term downside objective.
Below 15.30:
15.05 — NWOG Midpoint
Then:
14.95 — Monthly Open
14.85 — Yearly Open
14.79 — 25%
And potentially:
14.53 — NWOG Low
If VIX begins accepting below 15.56, particularly below 15.30, that would improve the case for MNQ and MES to rotate higher from their support structures.
VIX Bullish / Equity Bearish Scenario
If VIX holds the current area and turns higher, I want to see:
15.94 — Daily High
Then completion of the 1H FVG:
16.09
Above that:
~16.32 — Swing High
Then:
~16.55
And finally:
16.82 — Previous Week High
The more important signal would be acceptance above 16.09.
If VIX clears 16.09 and equities are simultaneously losing their intraday support, then the risk-off narrative gains significantly more credibility.
MNQ — Nasdaq Playbook
Current Price: ~29,563
MNQ has a mixed setup.
The higher-timeframe structure is still under pressure, and the bias table is bearish from the 3-minute through Daily, while the 1-minute is currently trying to turn higher.
Today's important range:
Premarket High: ~29,649
Daily Low: ~29,478.50
We are also sitting close to several major opens:
29,534.50 — Daily / Weekly Open
29,518.50 — Monthly Open
This creates an important decision zone immediately beneath current price.
MNQ Bearish Scenario
If price loses the daily/weekly and monthly opens, I want to see:
29,478.50 — Daily Low
Then:
29,468.25 — Previous Day Low / Daily FVG High
That puts MNQ inside the larger Daily Bullish FVG:
29,468.25 — High
29,340.50 — Midpoint
29,212.50 — Low
So the downside sequence becomes:
29,534.50 → 29,518.50 → 29,478.50 → 29,468.25 → 29,340.50 → 29,212.50
If that FVG fails completely:
29,075 — Previous Day Low
The zone between 29,468 and 29,212 is the major downside area I want to observe for either continuation or a higher-timeframe bullish reaction.
MNQ Bullish Scenario
If VIX retraces and MNQ can reclaim the upper side of today's range, first I want:
29,649 — Premarket High
Then:
29,764.75 — Daily High
That takes price into the larger Daily Bearish FVG.
Daily Bearish FVG
29,759 — Low
Inside that imbalance:
29,811.75 — Previous Week High
Then:
29,906.25 — Midpoint
Then:
30,053.25 — High
And above the FVG:
30,124.25 — Previous Day High
So the bullish sequence is:
29,649 → 29,764.75 → 29,811.75 → 29,906.25 → 30,053.25 → 30,124.25
That would require VIX to cool substantially from current levels.
MES — S&P 500 Playbook
Current Price: ~7,698.50
MES is sitting directly inside an important Daily Bullish FVG.
Daily Bullish FVG
7,710.25 — High
7,700.75 — Midpoint
7,691.25 — Low
Current price is sitting almost directly at the midpoint of this imbalance.
That makes this one of the more important structural decision points of the session.
MES Bearish Scenario
If price cannot hold the Daily FVG midpoint and continues lower:
7,691.25 — FVG Low
Then:
~7,687.50 — Daily Low
Below that there is a much larger pocket of space.
Next:
7,661.25 — Previous Day Low
Then the change-of-state area I am watching around:
~7,641.50
That gives the bearish sequence:
7,700.75 → 7,691.25 → 7,687.50 → 7,661.25 → ~7,641.50
If VIX simultaneously expands through 16.09, this scenario becomes substantially more convincing.
MES Bullish Scenario
For a bullish rotation, I first want MES to reclaim:
7,701 — Monthly Open
Then:
7,710.25 — Daily FVG High
Next comes the more important opening-price structure:
7,715.25 — Daily Open
Then:
~7,718.25 — Premarket High
Followed by:
7,725.75 — Daily High
Above there:
~7,738.25 — 1H Bearish Order Block
Then we enter a 1H Bearish FVG:
7,751.25 — Low
7,754 — Midpoint
7,757 — High
And above that:
7,766.25 — Previous Week High
So the bullish sequence is:
7,701 → 7,710.25 → 7,715.25 → 7,718.25 → 7,725.75 → 7,738.25 → 7,751.25 → 7,754 → 7,757 → 7,766.25
Intermarket Read
The cleanest risk-off configuration would be:
VIX: holds above 15.83 and eventually breaks 16.09
MNQ: loses 29,534.50 / 29,518.50, then breaks 29,478.50
MES: loses the Daily FVG midpoint and breaks 7,691.25
That would put both indices into deeper downside objectives while confirming that the volatility expansion is real.
The cleaner risk-on reversal would be:
VIX: loses 15.56, then trades toward 15.30
MNQ: holds above the monthly/weekly opening cluster and takes 29,649
MES: reclaims 7,701 → 7,710.25 → 7,715.25
That would suggest the overnight geopolitical move was at least partially exhausted and the indices are retracing the risk-off move.
High Post
Today is primarily a headline and intermarket-confirmation day.
There is no major scheduled data forcing an immediate move at 8:30, but oil approaching [amount redacted]and renewed Middle East escalation give the market a very real unscheduled catalyst.
The important thing is that the market has already reacted.
VIX has already expanded. MNQ has already fallen into higher-timeframe support. MES is sitting directly inside a Daily bullish FVG.
That makes chasing either direction from current price less attractive.
My main decision zones are:
VIX
15.30–15.56 support / 15.83–16.09 resistance
MNQ
29,468–29,534 support / 29,649–29,765 resistance
MES
7,691–7,701 support / 7,710–7,725 resistance
I want to see the market show whether this geopolitical repricing is going to continue, or whether the overnight move was the 0→1 expansion and the cash session begins with the 1→2 retracement.
No need to predict it.
Let VIX, MES and MNQ agree first. Then trade the confirmation.
