MES1!
📊 Friday Pre-Market Playbook – August 14, 2026
🎯 One Sentence Thesis
The indices are sitting near weekly and all-time highs after another strong week while VIX remains compressed near weekly lows.
The question today is:
Do buyers continue accepting price above this week’s highs, or does Friday finally produce a confirmed retracement after an already substantial expansion?
⸻
🌍 Market Theme
Today is a patience session.
MES has already established another all-time high above 7,800, MNQ is sitting directly beneath weekly liquidity, and VIX remains suppressed.
We also have two potential catalysts during my trading window:
🔴 8:30 AM ET – Retail Sales
- ▸Core Retail Sales m/m: 0.2% forecast
- ▸Retail Sales m/m: 0.1% forecast
🟠 10:00 AM ET – Preliminary UoM Consumer Sentiment
- ▸Forecast: 54.7
🟠 10:00 AM ET – Preliminary UoM Inflation Expectations
- ▸Previous: 4.2%
🟠 3:00 PM ET – President Trump Speaks
Trump’s speech is outside my normal trading window, but it remains important headline risk heading into the afternoon.
The market has already delivered much of this week’s expansion.
I don’t need to chase Friday’s highs just because the weekly structure remains bullish.
⸻
🟣 VIX Outlook
Current Price: ~14.53
VIX remains suppressed and appears to still be working through a potential 0→1 downside move.
📉 Bullish for Stocks
First objectives:
- ▸14.49 – Daily Low
- ▸14.39 – Weekly Low
Below there is the Daily Bullish Volume Imbalance:
- ▸14.20 – VIB High
- ▸14.16 – Midpoint
- ▸14.12 – VIB Low
The 14.20–14.12 area is my primary downside objective.
Continued VIX weakness into that zone while MES and MNQ hold bullish structure would support another equity expansion.
However, this is also an area where I’ll begin watching for VIX exhaustion and a potential reversal.
📈 Bearish for Stocks
If VIX reverses:
- ▸14.64 – Daily Open
- ▸14.80 – Previous Day High
- ▸14.85 – Yearly Open
- ▸14.90 – NWOG Low
- ▸15.15 – NWOG Midpoint
- ▸15.40 – NWOG High / Weekly Open
A reclaim of 14.85–14.90 gets my attention.
Acceptance above 15.15 would provide considerably stronger evidence that volatility is expanding and equities may be entering a larger retracement.
⚖️ VIX Decision
Below 14.39 → Favor continued index strength toward 14.20–14.12.
Above 14.85–14.90 → Respect the possibility of a larger index retracement.
⸻
🟡 MNQ Outlook
Current Price: ~30,266
MNQ is sitting essentially directly beneath the 30,273.25 Weekly High while holding above its Daily Open.
We may be building another 0→1 expansion higher, but simply sweeping the Weekly High isn’t enough for me to chase the move.
📈 Bullish Structure
Upside progression:
- ▸30,273.25 – Weekly High
- ▸30,319.75 – Previous Day High
- ▸~30,450 – Expansion objective
- ▸30,593.75 – Previous Week High
The major high-side objective becomes:
30,593.75
I want to see acceptance above the highs, particularly after the morning data, rather than buying simply because liquidity was taken.
📉 Bearish Structure
The bearish scenario begins with losing the opening structure:
- ▸30,213.00 – Daily Open
- ▸~30,194.50 – CISD
- ▸30,124.25 – Daily Low
Below there is the 4H Bullish Fair Value Gap:
- ▸30,104.00 – FVG High
- ▸30,005.00 – Midpoint
- ▸29,905.75 – FVG Low / Important Swing Area
That gives me a clean bearish progression:
Daily Open → CISD → Daily Low → 4H FVG
Acceptance beneath 30,124.25 makes the deeper rebalance significantly more interesting.
⸻
🔵 MES Outlook
Current Price: ~7,829
MES remains my cleaner index read.
We’ve already established a new all-time high at:
7,838.50
Price is now consolidating directly underneath it.
📈 Bullish Structure
The progression is:
- ▸7,830.75 – Daily High
- ▸7,838.50 – ATH
- ▸7,850
- ▸7,875
The important distinction is between sweeping the ATH and actually accepting above it.
At this stage of the weekly move, I’m not interested in buying simply because another high gets printed.
I want evidence that institutions are willing to continue delivering price higher.
📉 Bearish Structure
If the highs reject:
- ▸7,823.75 – Daily Open
- ▸~7,821.75 – CISD
- ▸~7,820 – Daily Low
- ▸7,810.25
- ▸~7,797.75 – Prior Swing Low
The first meaningful warning is losing the Daily Open/CISD cluster.
A break through the Daily Low with simultaneous VIX strength would give me much better evidence that we’re seeing an actual retracement rather than another shallow pullback.
⸻
🔗 Intermarket Confirmation
📈 Bullish Index Alignment
I want to see:
VIX
- ▸Break 14.49
- ▸Take 14.39
- ▸Expand toward 14.20–14.12
MNQ
- ▸Take 30,273.25
- ▸Accept above 30,319.75
- ▸Expand toward 30,450 → 30,593.75
MES
- ▸Take 7,838.50 ATH
- ▸Accept above the high
- ▸Target 7,850 → 7,875
That’s the cleanest continuation scenario.
📉 Bearish Index Alignment
I’m not trying to predict the top. I want confirmation.
VIX
- ▸Reclaim 14.64
- ▸Take 14.80
- ▸Reclaim 14.85–14.90
- ▸Potentially expand toward 15.15
MNQ
- ▸Lose 30,213
- ▸Break CISD around 30,194.50
- ▸Take 30,124.25
- ▸Enter the 30,104–29,905.75 4H FVG
MES
- ▸Lose 7,823.75
- ▸Break CISD around 7,821.75
- ▸Take the Daily Low
- ▸Target 7,810.25 → 7,797.75
That’s actual evidence of a reversal—not simply an assumption that the market is “too high.”
⸻
🎯 Trader’s Objective
✅ Don’t chase weekly or all-time highs.
✅ Don’t predict a top simply because the market has already rallied.
✅ Let 8:30 Retail Sales establish the first post-news structure.
✅ Respect the 10:00 Consumer Sentiment / Inflation Expectations release.
✅ Wait for liquidity to be taken before evaluating CISD.
✅ Require confirmation between VIX, MES, and MNQ.
✅ Remember that a Friday trade is not required.
The week has already delivered. Protecting the week matters more than manufacturing another opportunity.
⸻
🎯 Trading Plan
Today’s structure is straightforward:
Bullish: VIX continues lower while MES and MNQ take their highs and accept above them.
Bearish: VIX reverses through 14.85–14.90 while MES and MNQ lose their Daily Open/CISD structures.
Neutral: Price sweeps highs or lows without displacement and VIX provides no confirmation.
If that’s what I get:
No setup = No trade.
I don’t need the first Retail Sales move.
I don’t need to predict the top.
And I don’t need to trade simply because it’s Friday.
Liquidity → CISD → confirmation → entry.
No chasing the highs. No predicting the top. Let price confirm which side it wants.
