Market Context

The dominant macro story this morning is rates.

The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to its highest level since 2007, while markets continue repricing expectations around tomorrow's Federal Reserve decision. Equity futures are slightly lower, but the overnight structure is much more complicated than a simple risk-off session: both MNQ and MES sold aggressively overnight and then recovered a substantial portion of that decline before the cash open.

The two primary headlines are:

Stock futures slip as 10-year Treasury yield touches 19-year high: Live updates

10-year Treasury yield rises to highest since 2007 as Fed rate-hike expectations rise

Geopolitical risk also remains in the background. Oman and the U.S. are reportedly discussing efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, while a separate headline argues that the economic pressure campaign against Iran may be increasing Tehran's willingness to accept greater risk.

So there are competing forces this morning:

Rising yields / hawkish Fed expectations → equity headwind

Potential U.S.–Oman de-escalation efforts → possible geopolitical relief

Overnight equity recovery → buyers have not surrendered control

That last point is important. The overnight selloff has largely been bought back. Today is less about predicting direction and more about determining whether that recovery represents genuine acceptance or merely a retracement before another leg lower.

Economic Calendar

There are no red-folder events today, and the two primary morning releases are already behind us.

8:15 AM — ADP Weekly Employment Change

Actual: 16.3K Previous: 12.3K

Employment growth came in stronger than the previous weekly reading.

8:30 AM — Empire State Manufacturing Index

Actual: 7.6 Forecast: 14.8 Previous: 20.6

This was a substantial miss.

The combination is mixed: employment held up better while manufacturing weakened considerably.

Neither release changes the larger issue facing markets:

Tomorrow's FOMC decision remains the dominant macro catalyst.

With Treasury yields already moving sharply ahead of that decision, today could easily become a positioning session rather than a clean directional trend day.

U.S. Dollar — Macro Confirmation

Current: ~99.57

DXY remains strong after yesterday's expansion but has pulled back from this morning's high.

Key Levels

Daily High: 99.687 Weekly High: 99.736 Monthly High: 99.863

Daily Open: 99.480

Downside liquidity:

99.373 99.306

The higher-timeframe picture remains constructive, while the intraday structure is beginning to show some weakness.

The timeframe matrix reinforces that split: the lower timeframes are predominantly bearish while the 4H and Daily remain bullish.

Dollar Bullish Scenario

Holding above the daily open and reversing the current LTF weakness gives:

99.687 → 99.736 → 99.863

The most important level is:

99.736 — Weekly High

Acceptance above there puts the monthly high at 99.863 directly in play.

Continued dollar expansion alongside rising yields would create another headwind for equities and gold.

Dollar Bearish Scenario

Failure to recover the morning highs opens:

99.480 — Daily Open → 99.373 — Yesterday's Swing Low → 99.306 — Deeper Swing Low

The 99.373–99.306 area is much more interesting than chasing the current pullback.

Gold — Macro Confirmation

Current: ~4,329

Gold remains under pressure following the sharp decline accompanying dollar and yield strength.

Key Structure

Yearly Open: ~4,338

Daily Open: ~4,340.3

These sit directly inside the current state-change area.

Above:

~4,359 — Daily High / Swing High 4,374.5 — Weekly Open / NWOG Low 4,379.3 — Swing High 4,382.2 — NWOG Midpoint 4,389.8 — NWOG High

Below:

4,310.9 — Premarket Swing Low 4,301.4 — Daily Low 4,293.2 — Weekly Low

Gold's lower-timeframe matrix has improved after the overnight decline, but the 1H, 4H and Daily remain bearish.

That makes the current rally into the yearly/daily-open area particularly important.

Gold Bullish Scenario

First reclaim:

4,338–4,340.3

Then:

~4,359 → 4,374.5 → 4,379.3 → 4,382.2 → 4,389.8

Acceptance above the yearly and daily opens would tell us the overnight downside delivery is beginning to fail.

Gold Bearish Scenario

Reject the:

4,338–4,340 state-change cluster

Then:

4,310.9 → 4,301.4 → 4,293.2

Taking 4,293.2 would confirm continuation through the current weekly low.

VIX — Volatility Roadmap

Current: ~16.90

VIX may be the most useful confirmation chart this morning.

Yesterday's volatility expansion has been aggressively unwound, and VIX is now trading inside the New Week Opening Gap.

NWOG Structure

17.50 — High

17.09 — 75%

16.67 — Midpoint

16.26 — 25%

15.84 — Low

Additional References

Daily Low: 16.79 Weekly Low: 16.58 Daily / Weekly Open: ~17.57 Daily High: ~18.03 Equal High: 18.17 Previous Week High: 18.43

The rejection from 17.09 is important.

VIX Bearish / Equity Bullish Scenario

VIX is currently pressing toward:

16.67 — NWOG Midpoint

with:

16.58 — Weekly Low

immediately beneath it.

If those levels fail:

16.26 — NWOG 25%

Then:

15.84 — NWOG Low

The clean volatility contraction ladder is:

16.79 → 16.67 → 16.58 → 16.26 → 15.84

If VIX accepts below 16.58, that would provide strong intermarket support for MNQ/MES continuation higher.

VIX Bullish / Equity Bearish Scenario

VIX first needs to recover:

17.09

Then:

17.50 — NWOG High

followed by:

~17.57 — Daily / Weekly Open

Above there:

18.03 → 18.17 → 18.43

The more meaningful warning for equity longs isn't simply a VIX bounce from 16.67.

It is:

VIX reclaiming 17.09 and then accepting back above 17.50.

That would suggest today's volatility compression is failing.

MNQ — Nasdaq Playbook

Current: ~29,440 December Contract

This is our first session working fully from the new contract after rollover, so some of the visual relationship to older levels has changed.

The overnight sequence is significant:

MNQ sold from roughly the 29,500 area down to approximately 29,231, directly testing the NWOG midpoint, and then recovered almost the entire decline.

That gives us a very clear question:

Was 29,231 the completion of the sell-side delivery, or are we merely retracing before another leg lower?

The timeframe matrix currently leans bullish intraday from the 1m through 1H, while the 4H and Daily remain bearish.

That fits perfectly with the current situation: bullish intraday recovery inside a still-questionable higher-timeframe structure.

MNQ Bullish Scenario

The potential bullish state-change area is approximately:

29,379.75

If price retraces into/below that area and holds, it could establish the 1→2 retracement following the current 0→1 expansion.

That would be considerably more attractive than chasing price near the highs.

Above:

29,484.25 — Premarket High

Then a major cluster:

29,495.75 — Daily Open 29,508.25 — Equal Highs ~29,518 — Monthly Open

That entire:

29,484–29,518

region is the first major decision area.

Acceptance above it gives:

~29,594 — Swing High → 29,634 — Previous Day High → 29,686.75 — Swing High

So the bullish ladder becomes:

29,379.75 → 29,484.25 → 29,495.75/29,518 → 29,594 → 29,634 → 29,686.75

The ideal bullish setup would be a retracement first, not a chase.

MNQ Bearish Scenario

The first meaningful failure is back below:

29,392.75 — NWOG High

Then:

29,312.25 — NWOG 75%

Then:

29,231.50 — NWOG Midpoint / Today's Overnight Reaction Area

Below there:

~29,146.50 — Yesterday's Swing Low

Then:

29,070.25 — NWOG Low / Weekly Open

So the bearish ladder is:

29,392.75 → 29,312.25 → 29,231.50 → 29,146.50 → 29,070.25

The key distinction is that merely pulling back from 29,484 is not enough to establish a bearish thesis.

Breaking back through 29,392.75 begins to matter.

Losing 29,312.25 strengthens it.

Trading back through 29,231.50 would tell us the entire overnight recovery is failing.

MES — S&P Playbook

Current: ~7,690

MES has produced essentially the same overnight sequence as MNQ.

Price sold to:

7,644.75

which tested the area around:

7,648 — NWOG 75%

and then recovered aggressively.

MES has already reclaimed several important levels and is now challenging the monthly-opening region.

The timeframe matrix is particularly notable here:

1m through 4H are bullish.

Only the Daily remains bearish.

So MES currently has stronger multi-timeframe bullish alignment than MNQ.

MES Bullish Scenario

Immediate resistance:

7,697.50 — Premarket High

Then:

7,701 — Monthly Open

Acceptance above that cluster opens:

7,718.25 — Swing High

Then:

7,725.75 — Previous Week High

And finally:

7,739.25 — Weekly Bullish FVG High

The bullish ladder:

7,697.50 → 7,701 → 7,718.25 → 7,725.75 → 7,739.25

This is a particularly interesting upside roadmap if VIX simultaneously breaks through 16.67/16.58.

MES Bearish Scenario

The first important downside reference is:

7,684.25

Below that sits the lower-timeframe state-change area around:

7,675

Then:

7,660.75 — NWOG High

Below there:

7,648 — NWOG 75%

Then:

7,644.75 — Daily/Overnight Low

So:

7,684.25 → 7,675 → 7,660.75 → 7,648 → 7,644.75

The critical issue is again distinguishing a healthy retracement from actual bearish reversal.

A move into 7,684–7,675 that produces bullish confirmation could simply become the 1→2 retracement needed for another expansion higher.

Acceptance through that area and then below 7,660.75 changes the character of the move considerably.

Intermarket Scenarios

🟢 Scenario 1 — 0→1 Expansion, 1→2 Retracement, 2→3 Continuation

This is arguably the cleanest setup available from the current structure.

VIX:

16.67 → 16.58 → 16.26

MNQ retraces into its state-change structure around:

29,379–29,392

holds it, establishes bullish confirmation, and then expands:

29,484 → 29,518 → 29,594 → 29,634

MES retraces:

7,684–7,675

holds the state-change area and then expands:

7,697 → 7,701 → 7,718 → 7,725

This would give the desired:

0→1 → 1→2 → 2→3

rather than requiring a chase of the current recovery.

🔴 Scenario 2 — Overnight Recovery Fails

VIX holds 16.67/16.58, turns higher and reclaims:

17.09 → 17.50

MNQ fails near 29,484–29,518 and trades back through:

29,392 → 29,312 → 29,231

MES fails around:

7,697–7,701

then breaks:

7,684 → 7,675 → 7,660 → 7,648

That would suggest the overnight equity recovery was simply a retracement rather than a genuine change in delivery.

⚪ Scenario 3 — Price Continues Without an Entry

This possibility deserves explicit recognition today.

MNQ may simply continue through:

29,484–29,518

and MES through:

7,697–7,701

without providing a clean retracement.

If that happens:

Let it go.

Yesterday provided a similar lesson. Price can move without producing a setup that fits the model.

Correct directional analysis does not create an obligation to participate.

High Post

Today is another session where location matters more than prediction.

The market has already given us two substantial moves:

Overnight selloff → aggressive premarket recovery

That makes chasing either direction unattractive.

At the same time, the intermarket picture is unusual:

10Y yields are at their highest since 2007. DXY remains elevated. Gold remains under pressure. VIX is falling. MNQ and MES are recovering.

That disagreement tells us to demand confirmation rather than manufacture a macro narrative.

The cleanest decision points are:

VIX: 16.58–16.67 ↔ 17.09

MNQ: 29,379–29,392 ↔ 29,484–29,518

MES: 7,675–7,684 ↔ 7,697–7,701

Those are the areas where the market can tell us whether we're getting continuation, retracement, or failure.

And given that I'm still under the weather, there is no reason to lower my standards just because the market is moving.

The move that happens without my setup isn't a missed trade. The trade begins when the market gives me something I can actually define.

Would you like the decision tree to prioritize the intermarket confirmation first, or the MNQ/MES price levels first?
